Hello Reader,
I used to think the best argument always won — until I saw how decisions really get made. I used to think that as long as I was well prepared and my slides made sense, the decision could only go in favour of what I was presenting.
Had I considered how decisions are really made? No.
Had I considered who the key stakeholders were? No.
What I learned from observing more experienced colleagues was how strategic they were:
- choosing exactly who to have lunch with at the right time
- scheduling a “quick coffee catch-up” conveniently one week before an important meeting.
What changed once I understood this?
I understood the rules of the game — and I was able to play according to them.
For me, it feels right to understand the rules and then play them with positive intention. The intention behind it is what makes the difference.
So next time you have an important presentation, project meeting, or decision meeting coming up, ask yourself:
- Who should already know?
- Who is helpful to have in your corner?
- Who can give you constructive feedback in advance?
You can do it! 🙋♀️💪
